Stop Snoring - Free Ways to Stop Snoring

Author: Stephen Turner

Snoring is a common problem which can keep you up all night. Fortunately, there are a number of free stop snoring methods which you can try. All of these stop snoring methods have proved successful in many cases, especially for light snorers.

Change your sleeping position

Snoring is caused by vibration in your airways. It is well known that sleeping on your back relaxes the muscles in the back of your throat, which can cause a blocking of the air passage and thus cause snoring. Partners are used to rolling snorers over onto their side in order to stop the snoring. So make a conscious decision to try to sleep on your side. The following tip has been suggested to us: sew a tennis ball into the back of the snorer's pyjamas to prevent them from sleeping on their back. We'd be interested to know if you find success with this method.

Raise the top of the bed

Raising the top of the bed - where the head rests - by a few inches is another free way to stop snoring. This stop snoring method has proved successful for many people. One way to do this is to add a couple of extra pillows, although research shows varying success with this. Using too many pillows may not stop snoring, it may actually increase it! As an alternative, placing planks of wood under the bed supports at the head end will raise the bed and hopefully stop the snoring.

Losing some weight

It's medical fact that you are more likely to snore if you are overweight. Accordingly, losing weight may work to stop the snoring - and the general health benefits are well known. There are many methods for losing weight, but combining a healthy diet with daily exercising is definitely the best way to go. Consult your doctor for more information.

Leading a healthy lifestyle

Snoring is related to lifestyle factors, notably smoking and alcohol consumption. Moderating these habits can work to stop snoring - in addition to improving the snorer's general state of health. As a bare minimum, avoid drinking alcohol for 2-3 hours before going to bed, and avoid heavy meals right before bedtime.

Inhale steam

Snoring is often caused by congested nasal passages. If you suffer from allergies or a cold which is hard to shift, then stopping snoring could be linked to dealing with this root problem. Try clearing your nasal passages by inhaling steam over a bowl of hot water right before going to bed. This will help you breathe more easily and hopefully stop your snoring.

The above free stop snoring methods do work for many people, especially if they are light snorers. However, there are no guarantees that they will work. If these stop snoring methods do not work in your case, then consider purchasing one of a number of stop snoring products available on the market. Over-the-counter stop snoring treatments are available in drug stores and online. If you suspect that your or your partner's snoring is due to a more serious sleeping disorder, then consult a doctor.
