Author: Stephen Turner

If you've shared a room with a snorer before, you'll know that snoring can be a real disturbance to your sleep. The noise produced by snoring can vary from a slightly annoying rumble to a running chainsaw. The first step in your efforts to stop snoring affecting you is to speak with the snorer and let them know that their snoring keeps you awake. Hopefully, the snorer will then allow you to help them stop snoring. Fortunately, there are several methods that you might suggest to the snorer in an effort to stop his or her snoring ruining your sleep. This article introduces 11 stop snoring methods that have proved effective in many cases.

1 Lifestyle changes

Snoring is often connected to lifestyle factors, such as smoking, alcohol consumption or being overweight. You could encourage the snorer to lead a healthier lifestyle, quit smoking, or try to lose weight. Whilst giving up alcohol or tobacco altogether may not be possible, you can at least ask the snorer not to smoke or drink alcohol for at least 2-3 hours before going to bed. Research has shown the refraining from these activities in this way can work to reduce or stop snoring. Similarly, avoiding large meals before bedtime can work to reduce or stop snoring.

2 Sleeping position

A change of sleeping position can be effective in stopping snoring, although it has to be said that this is only usually effective to stop light snoring. Sleeping on the stomach as opposed to the back is the position to try. One technique that has proved effective in stopping snoring is to raise the top end of the bed a few inches so that the head is higher than the feet.

3 Anti-snoring pillows

Anti-snoring pillows have proved an effective method to stop snoring in many cases. They work by keeping the head at the optimum angle to stop snoring. Anti-snoring pillows are available in many stores and online.

4 Humidifiers

In conditions of dry artificial heat, common in many centrally heated homes, the throat is more likely to vibrate and cause the snoring sound. Humidifier work by keeping the air moist and make breathing easier, and this can reduce or stop snoring. Humidifiers are affordable and easy to install.

5 Nasal strips

Snoring is often caused by congested nasal passages. Nasal strips work to keep the nasal passages open, which can stop a person from snoring. Nasal strips are available in most drug stores/chemists and online.

6 Snore prevention mouthpieces

The devices look very much like gum shields and are available upon the advice of a dentist. These devices work to stop snoring by keeping the jaw in alignment during sleep which keep the main airway open so that there is less chance of vibration occurring.

7 Anti-snoring sprays

Sprays can stop snoring by clearing congested nasal passages to allow for easier breathing. Many light snorers have used them successfully to reduce or stop snoring, but it is suggested that this remedy may not be effective with heavy snorers. Anti-snoring sprays are available in drug stores/chemists or online.

8 Anti-snoring tablets

Anti-snoring tablets work by shrinking swollen tissue that may be blocking breathing passages at the back of the throat. The tablets also work to dry up mucous which is another factor in successfully stopping snoring. Anti-snoring tablets are available in drug stores/chemists or online.

9 Hypnotherapy

Some specialists claim that it is possible to stop snoring by means of hypnosis. You could follow a course of hypnotherapy - undergoing a number of sessions with a specialist.

10 Stop snoring CD

CDs are available in shops or online which work to stop snoring by working on the subconscious to control the muscles in the mouth while sleeping.

11 Sleeping specialist

Snoring may be a symptom of a more serious sleeping disorder called sleep apnea, in which case efforts to stop snoring using any of the above methods may prove infective. If you suspect your partner is suffering from this disorder, then consult a doctor and ask him to refer you to a sleep specialist.

Which stop snoring method will work for you or your partner?

Stopping snoring can be easier said than done. All the above methods have proved effective in stopping snoring in many cases, but this is not guarantee that they will work for you or your partner. However, all are worth a try as each stop snoring method is harmless and inexpensive. If you discover that none of the above stop snoring methods work in your case then it is suggested that you consult a sleeping specialist for further advice.
